Training for accreditation in DELF

A training for accreditation in DELF – DALF took place at Alliance Française Accra, from 22nd to 26th of February 2016; the program was meant to train French teachers in Ghana to become not only examiners of the DELF and DALF exams, but also deepen their knowledge in new teaching method, called the “action-oriented approach”.

Institut Français du Ghana, financed the five-day training program for teachers in Ghanaian public universities (Legon, Cape Coast, KNUST, UENR, UMAT, UDS, and Winneba) as well as those in the Alliances Françaises (Accra and Kumasi). The training provided accreditation so that these teachers could become examiners of the DELF (Certificate in French Studies) and DALF (The Advanced French language certificate), awarded by the French ministry of education and recognized internationally.

The five-day intensive training program touched on the various evaluation guidelines and marking schemes for the French language testing, as well as examination procedures laid-down by the International Centre for Educational Studies or (Centre international d’études pédagogiques - CIEP), based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL).

According to Julie Fournier-Angelo, the Cooperation Attaché for the French language at the French Embassy, “the training would also pave way for the implementation of new teaching methodologies, which would in turn improve the quality of teaching of French as a foreign language in Ghana”. The accreditation to be an examiner at the DELF/DALF demands the adoption of the “action-oriented approach” to teaching, in which, the learner, seen as a social actor, in an attempt to accomplish a task in a learning situation, would acquire the language through speaking, writing, listening and reading.

Ingrid Hummel, the Directress of Alliance Française, Kumasi and the Expert Trainer for the program, said “the training would provide the teachers the needed tools to mark the DELF Exams in Ghana, the same way as it is done in France and other part of the world”. She added that, “in order to achieve this result, there is the need to lay emphasis on the new teaching methodologies, which values the positive achievement in learning a language rather than simply looking at the insufficiencies”. According to her, “the training program is an important instrument which would not only resolve the challenges associated with teaching of French in Ghana, but would help teachers who are finding it difficult to teach students to truly communicate in the French language”.
Some teachers have expressed their opinions about the training program. For them, it is a great initiative.

Mr. Evans Kokroko, a lecturer at University of Mines, Tarkwa (UMAT), expressed his satisfaction: saying “this training would give a new face to the teaching of French in Ghana, because, it enables the lecturer vary his approach, which is a good thing”.
“I teach FLE (Teaching of French as a Foreign Language) to future teachers in this country, who would also teach in the near future, so the training program would help me better teach this program”, said, Dr. Sewoenam Chachu of University of Ghana, Legon. For her, the program has helped her truly understand “the action-oriented approach” to the teaching of French.

Mrs. Madeleine Mensah, a lecturer at the University of Energy and Natural Resources, Sunyani (UENR), also expressed her emotions: “it’s a great training program which would give me the accreditation to mark the DELF exams and also help the general public know their true level in the French language”.

Thanks to this training program, the accredited teachers can now serve as examiners for the DELF exams and have also seen their teaching methodologies improved, as this would one way or the other, shed more light on the DELF exams, for both French learners and specialists alike.
