On the occasion of the celebration of International Women’s Rights Day, the French Embassy, in partnership with the Alliance Française d’ Accra, organized a debate on the theme "Press for progress: Empowering Women in all settings, urban and rural". The discussion was moderated by two heads of SCAC partner associations, Vicky OKINE, Director of the NGO, Alliance for Reproductive Health Rights and Victoria NORGBEY, Director of Global Women Development Promoters (GLOWDEP).

This event highlighted the challenges facing women’s sexual and reproductive health and provided an opportunity to report on their situation in rural areas. Inequalities in inheritance, access to land and, by extension, bank credit and business development were addressed. Similarly, the difficult situation of access to care for women and lack of information on sexual and reproductive health were discussed. The speakers stressed that access to information was essential so that women could have a choice (choice on the number of children, their contraception, etc.). Lack of access to family planning was cited as the cause of early pregnancies and unsafe abortions in deplorable conditions, causing many deaths.

The participants and speakers concluded on the need to continue efforts to inform, sensitize and train young people in particular on these issues and thus promote women’s rights and equality between women and men.
