Launch of a comic book on transatlantic slave trade under the Sankofa project

The French Embassy in collaboration with the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB) and renowned Congolese Comic Illustrator based in France, Pat Masioni has published a short comic titled, “Elmina, Cape Coast: Ancestral Journey into Walls of Pain“.

This 16-pages comic publication captures European-African encounters during the slave trade era with a setting based in Ghana. Pat Masioni brilliantly creates a narration through the perspective of modern-day tourists from the Americas discovering Ghana during the 2019 “Year of Return”.
This creation was born out of an Artist residency program in Ghana organized by Institut Français du Ghana and Alliance française Accra in 2019. The use of comics was purposely chosen in order to appeal to young people interested in Ghana’s history and heritage. It has been published under the French Embassy Support Fund to Innovative Project “Sankofa” and will also serve as a contribution towards internal resources for GMMB.

Ten thousand copies of these comics have been printed and are to be distributed or sold by GMMB in Ghana only. All proceeds generated from the sale of these comics will be directed towards supporting GMMB’s future projects and forts and castles maintenance.
The comic book was launched during the “Pa Gya! literary festival” at the Goethe institute on October 16th. Pat Masioni has other more comprehensive work in progress on this period that he intends to publish internationally.
