Ghanaian military learn French

Mrs. SASSY-AKUÉ Evelyne, FLE (French as a Foreign Language) coordinator in Military Cooperation for the French Embassy in Ghana, visited the French language centers for Ghanaian military in Sekondi and Kumasi, from September 6 to 21, then the French language center in Tamale from September 22 to 30

These visits allowed for the reinforcement of cooperation in the field of French language teaching, notably through the reaffirmation of pedagogical and material support to teachers and military students.

The project Teaching French in the Military is the result of the military cooperation between France and Ghana. It aims to promote the use of the French language within the Ghanaian armed forces. Indeed, Ghana - an English-speaking country in a predominantly French-speaking region - takes part in many international peacekeeping coalitions. Therefore, for the Ghanaian military, knowledge of French represents the assurance of a good integration and dynamic communication within these organizations.

The Ghanaian armed forces have six French language training centers throughout the country. They each offer two sessions per year which end in March and September with the DELF exam (Diplôme d’Études en Langue Française), financed by the Military Cooperation Detachment represented by Lieutenant-Colonel Thierry GELAS-DORE. Launched in 2004, this project has enabled the training of more than 1000 Ghanaian soldiers in French. Moreover, due to the general enthusiasm and the incessant increase in requests, an online training platform was set up, with the objective of facilitating access to the courses by offering sessions outside of duty hours. The interest and enthusiasm shown by the student-military reinforces the positive dynamics of French language training in the Ghanaian armed forces.

The French Teaching Language Coordinator visited the three centers located outside of Accra: the Naval Base Sekondi, the 4th garrison in Kumasi, and the Air Force Base Tamale. This was an opportunity to talk with the officers in charge of the centers, teachers and students to ensure that the training centers were functioning properly. With the DELF exams approaching, the FLE coordinator also provided pedagogical support to the teaching teams by actively participating in the organization of mock exams.

The student-military have shown a strong will and determination to learn a language that is an asset for their career. It is with confidence that 110 A1, 30 A2 and 8 B1 candidates were able to take the 2nd DELF exams organized by the Alliance française d’Accra and Kumasi from September 27 to 30.

The French side would like to thank first of all the Education Office represented by its director Colonel William HONKOU for the good conduct of the visits, then for their excellent reception at their respective bases General Moses ARYEE General Officer Commanding Northern Command, Commodore Samuel WALKER Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, Air Commodore David AKRONG Base Commander Air Force Base Tamale, the officers in charge of the centers - Lieutenant-Colonel PENTI, Colonel B.
